A step towards Oita Prefecture – discovering its charm for the first time
Memories of Oita Prefecture and first encounters
I, Kasumi, have traveled to 47 prefectures across Japan. Among them, Oita Prefecture is particularly memorable. The first time I set foot in Oita was a few years ago on a short trip with a friend. From the moment I arrived, I was drawn in by the rich nature and warm atmosphere of the area.
Charm of tourist spots in Oita
Oita Prefecture has a wide variety of tourist destinations, including hot springs, rich nature, and historical spots. Beppu Onsen in particular is a famous spot that attracts many tourists throughout the year. I was one of them, and when I visited Beppu Onsen, I was able to visit many hot spring areas and enjoy their rich hot springs.
Oita Prefecture also has many spots where you can feel the history of Japan. For example, the stone Buddha statues of Usuki and the ancient temples of the Kunisaki Peninsula are perfect places to learn about Japan’s history and culture, which has continued since ancient times. When I visited, I was able to immerse myself in the deep history while listening to the commentary from the guide.
Oita Gourmet – Enjoy local flavors
Speaking of Oita Prefecture, there are many gourmet foods such as local chicken dishes, chicken tempura, and Bungo beef. Every time I visited Oita, I enjoyed dishes made with local ingredients. In particular, the chicken tempura served at “Bungo Restaurant in Oita City” was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, giving it a slightly different flavor than those from other regions.
Local sake is also one of Oita’s attractions. When I visited Tamanoi Sake Brewery, I was able to sample sake made using traditional methods, and was captivated by its deep flavor.
My recommended spots
If you’re visiting Oita, my recommendation is Yufuin. This area is not only attractive as a hot spring resort, but is also dotted with beautiful nature and fashionable cafes and shops. Walking through the streets of Yufuin, the scenery looks like a scene from a movie, and you will feel as if time is passing slowly. There are also many hot springs to soothe the fatigue of your travels, allowing you to refresh your mind and body.
The profound charm of Oita Prefecture – must-see sights and experiences
Former Matsudaira family residence with a sense of history
When I visited Oita Prefecture, my first stop was the former Matsudaira family residence. This is a sightseeing spot that recreates a samurai residence from the Edo period, giving it the feel of being on the set of a historical drama. As you walk along the narrow streets, you can get a glimpse of the life and culture of the samurai in the past. In particular, the garden allows you to enjoy the beauty of each season, and I spent a lot of time here.
Enjoy the blessings of the sea – whole dried squid from Saganoseki
Oita Prefecture faces the sea, so it has an abundance of fresh seafood. Saganoseki is especially famous for its whole dried squid. When I visited Saganoseki, I bought whole dried squid at a local shop. The squid dried in the sun had an increased aroma and was perfect as an appetizer with beer.
Fusion of hot springs and art – Beppu Art Museum
Beppu Onsen is not just a hot spring resort, but you can also enjoy its artistic side. I visited the Beppu Art Museum and was fascinated by the collaboration between contemporary art and hot springs. You can soak in the footbath while looking at the artwork, making it a place where you can heal both your mind and body.
Hell Tour – Experience the scenery of another dimension
There are several tourist spots in Beppu, Oita Prefecture that are known as “hells.” You can enjoy scenery that seems to be in another dimension, such as hot springs spewing out steam and bright red ponds. I also visited “Chinoike Jigoku” and “Umi Jigoku” and was overwhelmed by the spectacular views. In particular, the pudding steamed using the Jigoku-mushi method is worth trying.
Oita Prefecture’s local charm – learn more about life and culture
Meeting the people of Oita
When visiting Oita, the most memorable thing is meeting the locals. When I was walking around the center of Oita City, I happened to have a chance to talk to a local grandmother. She runs a small stall selling vegetables that she grows herself, and she feels that her warm smile and friendliness epitomize the charm of Oita.
Breath of traditional culture – Traditional crafts of Oita
Oita Prefecture is home to a variety of traditional crafts such as bamboo crafts and textiles. I visited the Oita Traditional Crafts Museum and was able to learn about the essence of craftsmanship. In particular, bamboo work is a technique unique to Oita, and has a delicate yet powerful beauty. I was able to experience making bamboo crafts directly from a craftsman, and I was impressed by the depth of the craftsmanship.
Local festivals – Enjoy Oita’s four seasons
Each region of Japan has its own unique festival, and Oita is no exception. When I visited Oita in the fall, I had the opportunity to participate in the local Oita Gion Yamakasa festival. The sight of local people coming together to pull floats and parade around the festival gave me a sense of the history, culture, and bonds of the area.
Local soul food – Tonkotsu Ramen
Oita Prefecture is also said to be the birthplace of tonkotsu ramen. I also enjoyed the rich soup and chewy noodles at Bungoya, one of the shops on Oita Ramen Kaido. The taste continues to be loved by locals and is supported by many people as Oita’s soul food.
Unexplored region of Oita – Explore unknown sights
Wonderful nature – Mt. Okashiro
Okagiyama, which stands out from the famous spots visited by many tourists, is known as an unexplored region of Oita Prefecture. From the top of the mountain, a magnificent view spread out, and I was captivated by its beauty. It is said to be a spectacular view, especially during the sunrise and sunset hours, making it a spot worth visiting.
Hideaway in Yufuin – A modest inn “Mizuon”
Yufuin is famous for its hot springs, but the inn called “Mizuon” is a hidden gem known only to those in the know. This inn is a small inn with only a few rooms, and its calm atmosphere and comfortable hot springs are appealing. I was able to spend some relaxing time here and forget about the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Unknown history – Oita Prefectural Museum of History
Oita Prefecture has many historical heritages and cultures, and we recommend the Oita Prefectural Museum of History as a place where you can learn more about them. At this museum, you can learn about the history, culture, and traditions of the prefecture. During my visit, I discovered many new things and became even more interested in the history of Oita Prefecture.
Spectacular coastline – Oita’s “Blue Cave”
Oita Prefecture, which faces the sea, has many beautiful coastlines and scenery. Among them, the spot called “Blue Cave” is known as a place where the clear seawater and the blue color created by the cave are beautiful. I also explored the cave by kayak and was impressed by its beauty.
Ending your trip – Guides and tips to help you enjoy your stay in Oita
Travel planning – creating the best time and schedule
The best time to visit Oita Prefecture depends on your personal interests and goals, but I especially recommend spring and autumn. Cherry blossoms bloom in spring, and autumn leaves are beautiful in fall. Additionally, the temperature during these seasons is pleasant, making it ideal for sightseeing. By planning your schedule in advance according to your goals and interests, you can travel more efficiently.
Use of transportation – take advantage of local buses and trains
When traveling within Oita Prefecture, we recommend using local transportation. In particular, Oita Kotsu buses and trains cover major tourist spots and are very convenient to use. There are also region-specific tickets and discount services, so it’s a good idea to check the information in advance.

The key to making the most of your trip to Oita is to utilize local information. Tourist information centers and local apps, such as Oita Travel Guide, can help you stay up-to-date with the latest information and discover hidden gems.
How to choose souvenirs – enjoy local specialties
Choosing souvenirs is an essential way to end your trip to Oita. I recommend choosing specialty products that are only available locally, such as “Beppu’s Jigokumushi Pudding” and “Oita’s Shiitake Boiled.” These products allow you to experience the flavors and characteristics of Oita, and are sure to be enjoyed by your family and friends, along with memories of your trip.
Impressions from my trip to Oita – In search of a drop of emotion
Traveling is a small adventure in everyday life. That is my belief. My recent visit to Oita Prefecture deepened that belief even further.
First of all, I was truly moved by the natural beauty of Oita. Spectacular views from Mt. Okashiro, kayaking in the Blue Cave, and the tranquility of Yufuin. These things brought me so much beauty and excitement that photos and words cannot convey. In particular, the scenery of Yufuin in the early morning gave me the feeling that time was passing slowly, and it was a moment of freedom from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
I also had many opportunities to experience Oita’s history and culture, which made this trip even richer. Through learning at the Oita Prefectural Museum of History and interacting with local people, I was able to feel the deep history and traditions of Oita.
Oita was also very attractive when it came to gourmet food. Beppu’s hell steamed dishes, Oita’s shiitake mushroom stew, and local sake. These foods and drinks were delicious and allowed us to experience the blessings of Oita’s land.
Through this trip, I realized that the charm of Oita lies not only in its scenery, history, and gourmet food, but also in the warmth and hospitality of the people who live there. Heartwarming experiences such as interacting with local people and staying at a small inn called “Mizuon” made this trip special.
Lastly, I would like to express one impression after my trip to Oita: “Traveling is a continuous process of refreshing your mind and making new discoveries.” My trip to Oita brought me many impressions and discoveries. As I continue to travel to other parts of Japan, I hope to enjoy new adventures while remembering my experiences in Oita.
