During my travels in Japan, Yokohama, which is the center of Kanagawa Prefecture, was particularly impressive. The city is one of the first five ports opened during the opening of Japan. It is full of historical buildings and scenery, such as Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse, Yamashita Park, and Chinatown. At these spots, you can feel the history of Yokohama, which grew along with the modernization of Japan.

Kamakura – Where the charm of an ancient city meets the charm of nature

Kamakura was the de facto capital of Japan in the 13th century. I visited the Great Buddha and many historical temples and felt the depth of their history. In particular, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine is worth visiting for its seasonal beauty. In addition, along the coast of Kamakura, there are beautiful coastlines such as Enoshima and Yuigahama, and you can enjoy the beauty of nature.

Hakone – A resort area that attracts people with its hot springs and spectacular scenery

When I visited Hakone, I used the “Hakone Tozan Railway” and was impressed by the superb view. Especially in the winter season, the open-air bath while gazing at the snow-covered Mt. Fuji is the best. Many travelers visit Hakone every year, and it is said that the average number of times they stay is 3.5 times. This data also shows how attractive Hakone is.

In addition to Yokohama, Kamakura, and Hakone, there are still many undiscovered charms in the prefecture. You can also enjoy snorkeling and diving in Hayama, where you can come into contact with the underwater ecosystem.

The Miura Peninsula is located in the southern part of Kanagawa Prefecture, facing Tokyo Bay. When I visited Miura City, I bought a local specialty called “Miura Daikon”. However, there is also plenty of fresh seafood to choose from. In particular, the experience of directly eating tuna caught in the morning at Misaki Port is popular with tourists from all over Japan. It is said that about 200,000 people visit throughout the year just to enjoy this tuna dish.

Kawasaki is a big city in Kanagawa along with Yokohama. I visited shopping malls such as Kawasaki Daishi and Kawasaki Le Front in the city center. Also, in recent years, technology exhibitions and hands-on events at the Kawasaki City Industrial Promotion Hall have been attracting attention. Spots like this are popular with visitors as places where you can feel the changing culture along with the development of Kawasaki’s industry.

In the coastal areas of Enoshima and Kamakura, “Shirasu-don” using fresh shirasu is popular. At Hase Sushi, which I visited, I enjoyed a bowl of rice topped with plenty of shirasu freshly caught that morning. The shirasu, which has a transparent feel, melts in your mouth along with the rice.

Yokohama’s Chinatown – Enjoy authentic flavors

Yokohama’s Chinatown is known as Japan’s largest gathering of Chinese food. Every time I visit, I discover new shops and dishes. In particular, the xiao long bao and Peking duck at “Kaikoro” allow you to enjoy the authentic taste of Japan while you are in Japan. The store is said to receive more than 10,000 visitors every month.

Hakone Hot Springs – Local Hidden Gourmet Spots

Hakone is famous for its hot springs, but there are also many hidden local gourmet spots. My recommendation is “Hakone Yumoto Tofu”. Here, you can enjoy fresh tofu and yuba that are produced locally. The nearby Ryokan Tsubaki’s udon noodles with hot spring eggs are also worth a visit.

– Kasumi Point: This Daibutsu is a cast-iron Buddha statue with a history of about 800 years. It was originally enshrined inside a building, but due to repeated natural disasters the building was destroyed and now sits outdoors. From its stately appearance, you can feel its timeless presence.

Former Yokohama Specie Bank – Yokohama

   – Kasumi Point: It is a building filled with the goodness of Western architecture from the Meiji period. The retro atmosphere of the interior speaks to the prosperity of the financial industry at the time. It is now open to the public as a museum.

Former Hikosaka Residence – Kanagawa Ward

   – Kasumi Point: A Western-style mansion from the Meiji period, preserved with a beautiful garden. The design and decoration of the building are delicate, and you can feel the admiration of the Japanese people for Western culture at that time.

Engakuji Temple – Kamakura

– Kasumi Point: A historic temple founded in 1282. The main hall and temple gate are designated as national important cultural properties, and the precincts are filled with seasonal flowers. You can forget the hustle and bustle in your mind in this quiet place.

Sankeien – Yokohama

– Kasumi Point: This Japanese garden was commissioned by a businessman in the Meiji era. With ponds, waterfalls, tea rooms, and more, this garden is a place where you can enjoy the scenery of each season. The perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle and calm your mind.
