Mie Prefecture as a Historic Place

Speaking of Mie Prefecture, there are many historical sights. Among them, “Ise Jingu” is particularly famous and is a place visited by many tourists. This shrine is considered to be a very important place in Japan’s Shinto religion and is known as the center of ancient beliefs. When I visited that place, I was enveloped in an indescribable sacred atmosphere, and I was able to feel the depth of Japanese history up close.

Kumano Kodo is also one of the spots where you can feel the history of Mie Prefecture. Long ago, this ancient road leading from the capital to Kumano was known as a route used by many trainee monks, members of the royal family, and aristocrats. By walking this path, I also felt like I was reliving their footsteps.

In-Depth Information on Mie Prefecture: Seeking Unknown Charms

There is a wealth of information about Mie Prefecture in travel magazines and websites, but there are also many spots and information that only locals know about. By visiting Mie Prefecture’s Town Development Association and local tourist information centers and interacting with the local people, I was able to gain in-depth information.

For example, the Sea Museum in Tsu City is a very popular spot among locals, but not so well known to tourists. Here, you can learn about the ecology and history of the Mie coast, and it is a recommended place, especially for families with children.

Rich natural environment in Mie Prefecture

During my trip to Mie Prefecture, I especially felt the charm of its rich natural environment. The beautiful coastal scenery of Toba City and Shima City attracts tourists, but the inland area of Mie Prefecture is also rich in natural treasures.

In Okuise, mountains surrounded by deep greenery and clear streams spread out, making it a perfect place for hiking and camping. Camping in Okuise was a very refreshing experience for me as well, away from the hustle and bustle of the city and becoming one with nature.

My recommendation is a long-established fish shop called “Uozen” in Tsu City. Here you can enjoy the exquisite taste of fresh fish cooked on the spot.

interact with locals

One of the attractions of traveling in Mie Prefecture is interacting with the locals. There are many friendly people in local cities and towns, and I have had many opportunities to speak with them.

What left a particularly strong impression on me was my experience at Yuhi no Yado, a small inn in Shima City. The inn’s grandmother told us local stories and history, and at night we were able to enjoy interacting with the locals while gazing at the starry sky on the nearby beach.

Mie Prefecture is a place where you can enjoy not only the beauty of nature but also various activities.

Marine activities in “Kihoku-cho” are especially memorable for me. Snorkeling in the highly transparent sea is overwhelmed by the beauty of colorful fish and coral. You can also enjoy SUP (Stand Up Paddle Board), and the view from the sea is exceptional.

In the mountains, we recommend tree climbing at Suzuka Forest near Matsuzaka City. The feeling of climbing trees in the middle of nature will make you feel like you have returned to your childhood.

Mie Prefecture Local Events

Various seasonal events are held in various places in Mie Prefecture. I was especially moved by the “Ninja Festival” held in “Iga City”. Not only can you learn about the history and techniques of ninja, but you can also walk around the town wearing a ninja costume.

Also, in spring, you can’t miss the cherry blossom festival at Tsukuno Park in Yokkaichi City, which is known as a famous cherry blossom viewing spot. When the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, it is crowded with many locals and tourists.
