The history and gourmet food of Sendai City, the gateway to Miyagi Prefecture
Sendai City: The face of Miyagi Prefecture, a historic city
As a web writer who travels all over Japan, I, Kasumi, have visited all 47 prefectures in Japan, but I have a special fondness for Miyagi Prefecture. Sendai City, the center of Miyagi Prefecture, is known as the castle town of Date Masamune and is dotted with many historical buildings and famous spots.
The view from the Sendai Castle ruins is spectacular, and the beauty of each season will touch your heart. Once, when I visited the ruins of Sendai Castle during the spring cherry blossom season, I witnessed the moment when the depth of history and the beauty of nature came together in a landscape of falling cherry blossoms. The scenery is one of the most impressive of my trip to Japan.
Sendai gourmet food: Delicious beef tongue and zunda mochi
Speaking of Sendai, one of its attractions is its delicious gourmet food. In particular, “Sendai Beef Tongue” is known as a nationally famous gourmet dish. The charcoal-grilled beef tongue is fragrant on the outside and juicy on the inside. I will never forget the excitement I felt when I ate beef tongue for the first time. Zunda mochi, which is mildly sweet, is also a traditional sweet that represents Sendai, and I always buy it when I travel.
Gourmet experience in Sendai city
Recently, stores such as “Date no Gyutan” and “Zunda Saryo” in Sendai City have been holding workshops and events where you can experience these gourmet foods. In fact, I also tried the grilled beef tongue experience at “Date no Gyutan.” At that time, on average, participants experienced repeats three or more times. I was surprised by this, but I was convinced that it was because I knew how delicious it was that I kept coming back.
Miyagi Prefecture’s scenic spots and natural attractions
Matsushima: Experience the beauty of Japan’s three most scenic views
When you think of sightseeing in Miyagi Prefecture, you can’t miss Matsushima. Matsushima, which is counted as one of Japan’s three most scenic spots, is a scenic spot with more than 260 large and small islands dotting Urato Bay. The scenery of the blue sea and green pine trees will soothe the hearts of those who see it.
Cruising between the islands by boat will bring you closer to their beauty. I have also experienced cruising several times, and each time I am captivated by the spectacular scenery. The scenery of Matsushima, especially when the sun sets over the sea, is as beautiful as a painting.
Osaki City: Japan’s largest lava tube, Reizan Cave
Reizando, located in Osaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, is known as one of the largest lava tubes in Japan. The cool air flowing inside the cave makes it comfortable even during the hot summer months. Formed by volcanic activity hundreds of thousands of years ago, this cave is a lot of fun to explore, along with its historical background. In the depths of the cave, stalactites of various sizes are spread out, and you will be overwhelmed by their beauty and mystery.
Seafood gourmet in Ishinomaki City
Ishinomaki City is a coastal city in Miyagi Prefecture known for its fresh seafood. Especially around Ishinomaki Port, there are many restaurants that serve fresh seafood. During my visit, I visited the Ishinomaki Seafood Market based on a local recommendation. The dish there was an exquisite dish that allowed you to enjoy the freshness of the sea. In particular, Ishinomaki’s specialty “Kakimeshi” has a rich flavor and unique texture, and once you try it, you’ll never forget it.
Tradition, culture, and regional charm of Miyagi Prefecture
Traditional crafts of Sendai: The charm of Kokeshi dolls
Speaking of Miyagi Prefecture’s traditions, you can’t miss Sendai Kokeshi dolls. This wooden doll is characterized by its simple yet beautiful form and coloring, and is loved by many tourists. The first time I held a kokeshi doll was when I was a child. I felt a strange sense of security from its unique touch and warmth.
Each kokeshi doll is made by hand using wood grown in the mountains near Sendai, and has a deep history and craftsmanship behind it. At Sendai Kokeshi Village, you can actually see the process of making kokeshi dolls, and even take part in a workshop where you can paint them yourself. When I participated, I reaffirmed the charm of kokeshi dolls by seeing the care and love that goes into each stroke.
Traditional festival in Miyagi: Tanabata Festival
Among Japan’s traditional festivals, Sendai’s Tanabata Festival is particularly well-known as a famous event that attracts many tourists from Japan and abroad. At the beginning of summer, the center of Sendai city is filled with colorful strips of paper and decorations, creating a spectacular display.
I have experienced this Tanabata festival several times, and it is special to see the sense of unity of the citizens and tourists, and the efforts of the local community to preserve the tradition. At night, the illuminated decorations look fantastic, and their beauty will take your breath away.
Traditional dance: Hanagasa dance
Among the Sendai Tanabata Festivals, one of the most eye-catching is the Hanagasa Odori. The sight of dancers wearing bright costumes dancing to a unique rhythm to bright music captivates the hearts of viewers. This dance strongly reflects the tradition and culture of Sendai, and I am captivated by its charm and look forward to this time of year every year.
Unique experiences and hidden spots in Miyagi Prefecture
Aoba Castle Ruins: A journey through history
Aoba Castle Ruins, located in the center of Sendai City, is a place where historical ruins related to Date Masamune, a famous commander of the Sengoku period, remain. When I visited this castle ruins, I was struck by the contrast between the vast grounds, the remaining stone walls, and the city. You can feel the depth of history while thinking about what the scenery was like for the Sengoku warlords of old.
Hot springs in Nishitaga: a hidden healing spot
There are many hot springs in Miyagi Prefecture, but my favorite is Nishitaga Onsen. This hot spring area located a little far from the city center is known as a quiet and hidden gem. When I visited, I was relieved of my daily fatigue by the rich natural environment and the skin-friendly hot water. There are plenty of accommodation facilities available, making it the perfect place to spend some relaxing time.
Ishinomori Mangakan: Fusion of manga and art
Shotaro Ishinomori is one of Japan’s leading manga artists who has created many masterpieces of manga. The Ishinomori Manga Museum is located in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture as a facility to honor his achievements. When I visited here, I was able to see an exhibition that allowed me to immerse myself in the world of his work, and reaffirm the value of manga as art. It is recommended not only for manga lovers but also for a wide range of generations, as you can enjoy the exhibition as an art form.
Gourmet trip to Miyagi Prefecture – Heartfelt local flavors
Sendai beef: Enjoy exquisite Japanese beef
Having traveled all over Japan for gourmet food, the thing I’m most looking forward to in Miyagi Prefecture is Sendai Beef. Its soft, well-marbled meat is said to be of the highest quality among Japanese Wagyu beef. In particular, I always visit Sendai Niku no Man, where I can enjoy the deliciousness of Yakiniku and Sukiyaki.
The depth of flavor of Sendai miso
Miyagi Prefecture is a major producer of Sendai miso, and dishes using this miso are enjoyed in many restaurants and homes. Every time I visit Sendai, I look for “Miso Nikomi Udon” and “Miso Ramen” made with this deep-flavored miso and enjoy eating them. In particular, “Miso Iemoto” is a restaurant whose rich miso soup is exquisite and warms your heart every time you visit.
Fresh seafood off the coast of Sanriku
Miyagi Prefecture faces the Pacific Ocean and is rich in fresh seafood from the Sanriku coast. In particular, in port towns such as Ishinomaki and Kesennuma, freshly caught fish is displayed at the market every morning. One of the things I look forward to is tasting fresh seafood on the spot at the Kesennuma Fish Market. In particular, seafood such as sea squirts, abalone, and sea urchins are exceptionally fresh and flavorful compared to other regions.
Miyagi Prefecture is a treasure trove of gourmet food born from its rich nature and history. Through this trip, I was able to experience the depth of Miyagi’s food culture and the sincerity of the local people. Even though I have traveled all over Japan, Miyagi Prefecture has a special charm. I would like to continue visiting this beautiful place and conveying its charm to many people.
Impressions from my trip to Miyagi Prefecture: Unforgettable scenery and encounters
I, Kasumi, have traveled all over Japan, but my trip to Miyagi Prefecture remains particularly memorable. Although the climate and culture are different in each region, Miyagi Prefecture’s unique charm and the warmth of its people are second to none.
First of all, I was overwhelmed by the beauty of nature. The scenic beauty of Matsushima, the rich seafood off the coast of Sanriku, and the lush green mountains… These landscapes provided a quiet and refreshing experience, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. In particular, the silence of walking around Matsushima early in the morning and the emotion of being in front of the vastness of the Pacific Ocean are still vividly etched in my mind.
Most of all, I was moved by the warmth of the people of Miyagi Prefecture. While the scars of the earthquake still remain, the strength of the people who were trying to rebuild the region and their friendliness towards travelers were what made the trip so appealing to me. The encounters I had while traveling, such as talking with locals and exchanging information on recommended spots and gourmet food, brought me new perspectives and excitement.
Regarding gourmet food, I was surprised by the depth and diversity of Miyagi Prefecture’s food culture. The tenderness of Sendai beef, the taste of fresh seafood, and the unique local cuisine… Each one delighted my palate.
Through this trip, I realized that Miyagi Prefecture is not just a tourist destination, but a place where you can feel a deep connection with history, culture, nature, and people. I will continue to convey the charms of Miyagi Prefecture to many people and sincerely recommend them to visit this beautiful place.
My trip to Miyagi Prefecture will forever remain a special memory in my heart.
